Severe Weather
Severe weather can seriously impact life safety, the campus environment, and university
operations.

Severe Weather includes hurricanes, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and lightning strikes.
What to do
If you are indoors:
- Seek an interior room. Find a small, windowless interior room, such as a closet, office, bathroom, or stairwell.
- Avoid certain areas. Stay away from windows, exterior doors, and large open spaces (like gymnasiums,
auditoriums, and cafeterias).
- Protect yourself. Get under sturdy furniture; cover head/neck with arms or padding (blanket, mattress).
If you are outdoors:
- Get inside and go low. The safest place to be is in a basement or on the lowest floor of the building.
- Find shelter quickly. Immediately enter the nearest sturdy building. If there is no time, or if you are
in an open area, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area and cover your head.
- Avoid vulnerable spots.Do not take cover under a highway overpass, as it can funnel wind and debris. Stay
away from tall objects, trees, and power lines.
- Leave your vehicle.Abandon cars for shelter if nearby. Otherwise, lie flat in a ditch and cover your
head.
After the storm passes
- Wait for the "all clear."Do not leave your shelter until you receive an official notification.
- Check for Hazards: Assess your surroundings and be aware of downed power lines, damaged structures, or
other debris.
- Provide first aid. If you can, help anyone who is injured. Do not move severely injured people unless
they are in immediate danger.
- Use your phone wisely. Use your phone only for emergencies to avoid draining the battery. Once it is safe,
contact your family or emergency contact.
