Gwen Y. Wood Book Scholarship

Stack of booksDr. Gwen Y. Wood was our MPA Program's first director. She guided the program through its first six years of existence, developing curriculum, admissions standards, and creating a community of faculty and students dedicated to public service.

When she retired, we chose to honor her by creating this book scholarship. The scholarship provides support to an MPA student to help defray the cost of books, which we know are expensive. This scholarship is awarded based on need and academic/public service performance.

Ralph Walker Scholarship

The Ralph Walker Scholarship is awarded to a student in the Master of Public Administration Program who shows promise for an outstanding career in public service. A committee composed of MPA faculty members selects the awardee.

History

  • In 1991, Augusta College and Georgia Southern University entered into an agreement with Georgia Southern's Master of Public Administration program to become a "satellite" program offered at Augusta College. This was initiated by Dr. Ralph Walker, Chair of the Department of Political Science.

  • 1994, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents indicated its willingness to consider the transfer approval if the new program would be structured so that it would be set on a course to meet the accreditation standards set by NASPAA (Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration).

  • As a direct result of Dr. Walker's dedication, guidance, and consultation with Augusta College, NASPAA, and the Board of Regents, the new program, as designed, was on course to be accredited during the four-year cycle of evaluation.

  • By 1996, the Augusta "satellite" MPA degree program of Georgia Southern would transfer to become a new graduate offering of Augusta College. The first class enrolled in Augusta College MPA classes September 1996 and the first six graduates of the program completed their studies and graduated June 1998.
