MCG’s Teaching Development Seminar Series, formerly known as the Teaching Scholars Fellowship, is designed to provide a select group of Augusta University health professions faculty and staff with a guided training experience that broadens their professional identity in education; equips them with new skills, abilities, and knowledge; and prepares them to make scholarly and educational contributions that will enhance or improve health professions education at the Medical College of Georgia and beyond. Overview

MCG’s Teaching Development Seminar Series is designed to advance teachers’ and educators’ understanding of learning principles and teaching approaches supported in the education literature (KNOW), their effectiveness in implementing these principles and approaches (DO), and disseminating them with learners, colleagues and leaders within their own departments and programs (SHOW). The program has a strong medical education emphasis, but individuals from other health professions will readily relate to session content. Similarly, MCG faculty with teaching responsibilities have been the primary target audience, but house staff and staff with significant teaching or education roles have benefited greatly from the program.

MCG’s Teaching Development Seminar Series curriculum encompasses a variety of clinical and classroom teaching topics that are common to health sciences education and adopts a blended seminar discussion and practice lab format. In line with the goals of the program, each session involves participants discussing their teaching assumptions and practices, reflecting on how their perspectives and experiences align with or differ from the educational literature and their peers in the program, implementing and experiencing various teaching approaches in simulated situations, and finally considering how to incorporate into other teaching settings. The next cohort of MCG’s Teaching Development Seminar Series will begin in February 2022. Applications will be due in the Fall of 2021.

Expectations

9-month commitment (no meetings in January, July or December)
80% attendance at weekly sessions
- - Fellows from outside Augusta have successfully video-conferenced into weekly sessions in the past and agreed to attend certain sessions in person.
  - Weekly sessions are typically 4:00-5:30PM on Thursdays. In the past, some cohorts have elected to start slightly earlier or later

Attend other teaching-related events (e.g., Education Grand Rounds, visiting professors talks) as schedules permit
Completion of an education-related scholarly project

Funding

Applicants negotiate with their department to have release time to attend weekly training sessions and to develop a project. The department financially supports this release time.

Eligibility

Priority for fellowship is given to MCG faculty applicants. However, the best cohorts for the program have included participants from a variety of backgrounds, including faculty from various health sciences colleges and coordinators from various clerkships. Faculty from Summerville campus who have an interest in health sciences-related education would be a welcome addition to the group.

Application Process

Individuals interested in participating in MCG's Teaching Development Seminar Series are asked to complete the application found here and submit by September 15, 2022. Acceptance is based applicants interests and responsibilities within health professions education and the availability of learner slots within the program.
