MD-MPH Program

Students at Augusta University have the opportunity to integrate medical school with public health course work, community service, and field work. MD-MPH students are able to obtain an MPH degree with 6 less credit hours than the stand-alone program in just one year.

MD-MPH Curriculum

The MPH portion of the MD-MPH degree is largely an online/hybrid program.

Students complete all requirements for the MD degree plus an additional 39 MPH credit hours, including a two credit-hour public health internship. The MPH portion is completed within one academic year, usually between the third and fourth years of medical school, with students returning to MCG to complete their medical training and prepare for residency interviews. Both MD and MPH degrees are awarded at the end of five years.

The MPH curriculum is based on Competencies for MPH Programs developed by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. Students select one of three concentrations:

• MPH in Health Management (MPH-HM)
• MPH in Health Informatics (MPH-HI)
• MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences (MPH-SBS)

MPH requirements include:

• 21 credit hours of core public health courses
• 9 credit hours of interdisciplinary concentration courses
• 6 credit hours of practicum (internship) and a culminating (capstone) experience
• 9 credit hours of electives (up to six of these credits may be transferred from the MD curriculum)

Accreditation

The Augusta University MPH program is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.

Admission Process

Enrollment in the Augusta University MD program qualifies medical students to apply for the MD-MPH dual-degree program. No additional test scores are necessary. Medical students interested in pursuing an MPH degree must be in good academic standing at MCG, have completed the United States Medical Licensing Exam Step 2 (CK and CS exams) before enrolling in the MPH program, and submit a Dual-Degree Application Form to the MCG Associate Dean for Curriculum, Dr. Shilpa Brown, by March 1 to begin MPH courses in August.

Upon approval, enrollment in the dual-degree program is straightforward, with limited paperwork.

Application Deadline

March 1 for August admission. Must complete USMLE Step 2 CK and CS first.

Tuition

Students pay medical school tuition during the time they are enrolled in medical school and graduate student tuition during their MPH year. Tuition rates are based on in-state residency.
