Human Cord Blood Stem Cell Core

The mission of the Human Cord Blood Stem Cell Core is to support basic and clinical research towards development of novel therapies.

Diseases Treated

Cord blood and umbilical cord tissue contain potentially lifesaving hematopoietic (blood forming) and mesenchymal stem cells. These cells can be used for treatment of diverse diseases including

  • Hematological Malignancies (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma)
  • Neuroblastoma                                                      
  • Bone Marrow Failure Diseases
  • Anemias
  • Sickle Cell Disorders
  • Thalassemia Disorders
  • Immune deficiencies
  • Auto-Immune Diseases (e.g., Crohn’s Disease, Lupus)
  • Neurologic Disorders (e.g., Autism, cerebral pals, traumatic brain injury)
  • Genetic and/or Metabolic Disorders (e.g., Aging frailty, Tay-Sachs disease)

The core provides the following products:

  • Fresh unprocessed cord blood
  • Cryopreserved unprocessed cord blood
  • Fresh cord blood-derived mononuclear fraction
  • Cryopreserved cord blood-derived mononuclear fraction
  • Cryopreserved unprocessed Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells
  • Cryopreserved sorted Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells

Sorting CD34+ cells are performed by the Flow Cytometry Core.
