Medical College of Georgia
Department of Radiology and Imaging
Dr. Rasha Makkia, M.S., Ph.D., DABR, serves as Section Chief of Diagnostic Medical Physics and Assistant Professor of Radiology and Imaging at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Augusta University/Wellstar MCG Health. She earned her Master of Science in Medical Physics and Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Physics from the CAMPEP-accredited program at East Carolina University and completed her residency in Diagnostic Medical Physics at Yale University/Yale New Haven Health. Dr. Makkia is board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Diagnostic Medical Physics.
Dr. Makkia is a member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group 444: Radiation Dose Indices from Patient Exams (RADIPEX). She served on the Radiation Oncology Steering Committee within the Department of Radiation Oncology and is currently a member of the Radiation Safety Committee at MCG.
Provides didactic instruction in Diagnostic Medical Physics to radiology residents and radiation oncology medical physics residents, with lectures covering topics including
- Breast Imaging (Mammography)
- Fluoroscopy
- Computed Tomography (CT)
- Radiation Biology
- Radiation Safety
- Medical Imaging Informatics (PACS)
- Ultrasound (US)
Her clinical expertise spans quality assurance and radiation safety across all diagnostic imaging modalities, with particular emphasis on patient dose optimization, fluoroscopy dose management, and MRI image quality. Her current clinical research interests include radiation dose reduction and image quality optimization across diagnostic imaging, with a special focus on ultrasound, fluoroscopy and interventional radiology. To further improve education, diagnostics, and treatment, she is also exploring the development of 3D computational modeling derived from CT and MR imaging for various radiological applications.
Dr. Makkia is also a dedicated educator and mentor, training medical physics residents, radiology residents, and undergraduate/M.D. students, many of whom have presented at national meetings including AAPM, RSNA, and SEAAPM. She is an active member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and is committed to advancing imaging quality, safety, and innovation while fostering the next generation of medical physicists.
