Bio

Larry B. Mellick, MS, MD served as the first chairman of the new Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia and continued in that role from August of 1996 until 2003. His first academic chairman role began in 1993 when he took over leadership of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in San Bernardino County, California. Dr. Mellick attended the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo from 1974 to 1977 and accomplished his specialty training in the military. His first residency was in Pediatrics (Madigan Army Medical Center) and four years later he completed a residency in Emergency Medicine (Brooke Army Medical Center). He holds three board certifications (Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine). Besides being the first academic chairman at the MCG department of emergency medicine he started the pediatric emergency medicine programs at the Medical College of Georgia (Augusta University) and Loma Linda University Medical Center. He also began the successful pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Loma Linda. The ED observation unit, the Center for Operational Medicine, the Emergency Medicine ultrasound program, the International Medicine program and the Tactical Emergency Medicine program began during Dr. Mellick’s tenure as chairman at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Mellick has had the opportunity to be the editor of multiple emergency medicine publications published through the American Health Consultants. He was the creator and first editor of the clinical monograph, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Reports. He also participated in development of the ED Nursing Newsletter and was the clinical editor of that publication for a number of years. For many years he served as executive editor of the ED Management Newsletter, ED Legal Letter and was an interim editor for Emergency Medicine Reports. For several years Dr. Mellick was one of three full-time physicians working full-time for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was fully credentialed with the FBI for approximately ten years and worked with the Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and the FBI Training Academy during that period of time. He has been the author of multiple publications and his research interest has been headache and orofacial pain. In recent years Dr. Mellick has developed an interest in clinical photography and the creation of training videos for emergency medicine. His popular YouTube channel has over 37 million views, 75,000 subscribers and over 500 videos. He is a contributor to well-known emergency medicine textbooks such as the Atlas of Emergency Medicine and Roberts and Hedges' Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine. Currently, Dr. Mellick has been appointed by American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Emergency Medicine to be a question writer for Pediatric Emergency Medicine Subboard examination.
