Minor in Social Sciences

There are many good reasons to declare a college minor. A minor is a way for you to complement or enhance your major, build your professional credentials, and/or enjoy a set of personally fulfilling classes.

We hope you'll consider declaring one in the Department of Social Sciences.

Note that courses submitted for the minor, including prerequisites, must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the department chair.

Our Minor Options

Criminal Justice

A minor in Criminal Justice helps students learn about various aspects of the criminal justice systems and crime. Students may choose to focus on a particular part of the system or learn about many aspects to include law enforcement, corrections, and the administration of justice. The minor is a great addition for students whose careers may have them interact with those in the criminal justice system including Biology, Chemistry, English, Political Science, Psychological Sciences, Social Work, Sociology, and more. Our minor is an interdisciplinary and includes courses in criminal justice, sociology, political science, and psychology.

Gerontology

A minor in Gerontology helps prepares students for careers working with older adults or being advocates for the elderly. This minor is a an excellent addition to a degree for anyone who will be helping people as they age including doctors, nurses, social workers, human service workers, and occupational therapists. As our population continues to age, the need for educated professionals in gerontology will continue to grow. Our minor includes courses in sociology, social work, and psychology and allows/encourages students to do an internship.

International Studies

Do you know where Djibouti is…or want to learn? Declare a minor in International Studies and enroll in classes like International Relations (POLS 3801), Intercultural Communication (COMM 3100), US Foreign Policy (POLS 4905), and Governments of Developing Nations (POLS 4701).

Nonprofit Management

Are you interested in a career in community service? Earn a minor in Nonprofit Management and take classes like Nonprofit Management (POLS 4050), Services Marketing (MKTG 4720), Museum Studies: Business of Museums (ART 3960), and Youth & Society (SOCI 3331).

Political Science

Would you like to know more about the exciting world of politics and the vital role government plays in our lives? Get a minor in Political Science and try classes like International Terrorism (POLS 4906), Electoral Behavior (POLS 3901), The Supreme Court (POLS 4807), Ancient Political Thought (POLS 3501), and World Politics (POLS 4902).

Sociology

A minor in sociology is a great way to learn about people and develop skills that employers are looking for such as problem solving and using reliable data in decision making. We have some of the most interesting and active courses at Augusta University and we offer courses online too! Courses include Sociology of Sport, Social Deviance, Sociology of Murder, Gender & Society, Youth & Society, Social Movements, Sociology of Medicine, Social Psychology and many more.
