Our EMS faculty encompass decades of prehospital leadership, education, training and medical direction. Augusta University has recruited experts from all over the country that possess unique prehospital backgrounds to ensure Region 6 is provided the best possible EMS education and direction possible.
All our faculty provide medical direction for agencies throughout the Central Savannah River Site Area (CSRA) as well as serve on local, state and national EMS committees.
Dr. Bradley Golden, DO
As a native Texan Bradley started his medical career in the emergency medicine services at the age of 17, volunteering for his city’s EMS. Bradley graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing with high honors from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and worked as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department for 5 years. While working as a nurse, he became passionate about education and taught as a faculty associate for the Texas Tech University School of Nursing. In 2015 he graduated with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. Bradley completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, PA. After completing an EMS fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia, he stayed on as a faculty member.
Dr. Todd Burgbacher, DO
Dr. Burgbacher serves as Assistant Medical Director of Augusta University EMS Fellowship, Assistant Professor Medical College of Georgia Department of Emergency Medicine, Medical Director of Augusta University Paramedic Program, former Medical Director of Air Med helicopter EMS (no longer in service) and one of Augusta University EMS field physicians. Dr. Burgbacher received his undergraduate degree from The University of Florida and his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his emergency medicine training at Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University) and an EMS Fellowship at University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Dr. Burgbacher serves as Assistant Medical Director of Gold Cross EMS and Medical Director of Aiken County EMS. Dr. Burgbacher has also been instrumental in starting Augusta University's Physician Response Vehicle and provides on-scene medical direction and patient care. Dr. Burgbacher is also responsible for Augusta University Emergency Medicine resident rotation during their EMS month.
COL (RET) John McManus MD, MBA, MCR, FACEP, FAAEM
COL (Ret) John G. McManus is retired from the military with a combined Federal service record of over 24 years from the United States Army as a Medical Corps Officer and decorated combat veteran. After graduating from North Georgia Senior Military College in 1988 with a B.S. in chemistry on a full National Guard Scholarship, COL (Ret) McManus attended his M.D. training at Georgia Health Sciences University serving as student government president his final year in 1992. Since then, Dr. McManus has served on active duty in numerous assignments and deployments (Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq) throughout the world. He completed a 4 year emergency medicine residency in 1999 at Madigan Army Medical Center and University of Washington, an EMS fellowship at Oregon Health and Sciences University and a Master Degree in Clinical Research. Furthermore, he completed his MBA in July 2012 from Brenau University. He had the honor to serve as the Chief Medical Officer of the last Combat Support Hospital (47th CSH) in Baghdad Iraq. His prior assignments include: Director for the U.S. Army’s EMS Department and also the Director for the Center of Pre-deployment Medicine, at the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas (equivalent to Associate Deans). COL (Ret) McManus also founded and served as the program director for both the U.S. Army's first emergency medicine subspecialty fellowship, at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (2007-11) and at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (2010-11).
His research focus includes trauma and combat casualty care focusing on prehospital, disaster and critical care medicine. He is an internationally recognized researcher and speaker with over 500 presentations and accomplished author of over 100 scientific publications to include editor of 5 medical textbooks. Dr. Phillip Coule, MD, MBA, FACEP
Richard Schwartz, MD
Dr. Schwartz is a 1989 graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and then completed his Emergency Medicine Residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. He has extensive military operational experience. He served with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He also served with the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) and the Joint Special Operations Command (Airborne). Dr. Schwartz was Chief of Emergency Medicine at Eisenhower Army Medical Center before joining the MCG faculty and received numerous awards during his Army service including the bronze star and two meritorious service medals.
While at MCG, he has been instrumental in curriculum development. He was one of the original developers of the National Disaster Life Support Courses. These innovative courses such as Basic and Advanced Disaster Life Support (BDLS and ADLS) bridge the gap between numerous military and civilian groups that may need to work together during major disasters. The courses have been taught in forty-eight states leading to the training of over one hundred thousand providers. More recently he has worked with the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) on the development of standardized training for tactical emergency medical support. He is very active in research pertaining to the improving the methods employed in austere and disaster medical situations. His relevant publications include three Disaster Medicine textbooks and chapters in three additional texts. Dr. Schwartz has published extensively in the field with numerous abstracts and peer-reviewed articles pertaining to Disaster Medicine. Dr. Schwartz is an active participant in the Terrorism Injuries: Information Dissemination and Exchange (TIIDE) project with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This project has helped lead efforts for standardized disaster triage through the National Association for EMS Physician (NAEMSP). He is also a medical device innovator and holds eight patents.
