Welcome to Anesthesiology Residency Program at MCG

We are proud that we were the first academic anesthesiology department to be established in the South. Back in 1937, when our department was founded, we had one faculty member: our Chair, Dr. Perry Volpitto. We slowly grew from one or two residents in the 1940s to the 48 we have today.

Our mid-sized program accepts 12 categorical residents per year from diverse backgrounds. We are looking for residents who are team players, self-motivated, and enthusiastic. When you enter our program, you’ll join a team of physician anesthesiologists dedicated to excellence in education and patient care.

Augusta University Medical Center is a Level 1 trauma and stroke center with separate facilities for adults and children that generate sufficient volume to ensure exposure to varied clinical pathologies. Most of your clinical anesthesiology years are spent at AUMC. Our dedicated, highly accomplished, and diverse faculty will provide hands-on instruction and oversight and prepare you for independent practice.

The health and wellness of our residents is also a priority. Our Resident Wellness Committee offers opportunities to socialize outside of work so we can get to know each other’s families, enjoy local and regional entertainment, and have a real connection to each other.

Augusta is Georgia's second-largest city and host of The Masters Golf Tournament each spring. The Masters brings over 200,000 visitors from across the world to the Augusta National. The city is also home to Fort Gordon, a major U.S. Army base and home to the new National Cyber Security Headquarters. Augusta offers opportunities for many indoor and outdoor activities including mountain biking, hiking, concerts, and golf. It is about two hours east of downtown Atlanta via I-20, two hours from Savannah Georgia, and an hour from Columbia, South Carolina.  Each city offers several opportunities for entertainment and adventure.

We hope you can picture yourself spending four years in sunny Augusta.  It’s a great place to grow both professionally and personally.  Our residents are smart and clinically quite good. Some are accomplished researchers as well. I have truly enjoyed working with each and every one of them.  I look forward to sharing the next four years with you.
