Why choose Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia?

Integrated Program

Your four-year training includes a PGY1 year with various subspecialties preceding a foray into the operating room.

Revamped Education Program

Our new curriculum better meets the needs of our residents, with an emphasis on the topics of greatest importance to anesthesiology residents. Our residents also have the opportunity to earn a Foundations of Leadership certificate.

World Class Simulation Center

The Interdisciplinary Simulation Center is an important part of training from the outset. Beginning in the PGY1 year, residents will learn everything from the basics of inserting an IV to OSCE-style sessions with case scenarios and standardized patients. This hands-on simulation training prepares residents for the APPLIED exam before graduation.

Perioperative Surgical Home

The anesthesiology department has a great relationship with its surgical colleagues. Part of our Perioperative Surgical Home is a formal ERAS pathway. We believe in holistic patient care which starts in our preoperative clinic and continues through until complete recovery.

One Hospital Location

Our residents train within the AU Health system and thus perform a majority of their cases under one roof while still receiving the necessary diversity of cases to become independent anesthesiologists. We are home to the region's only tertiary hospital, the Children's Hospital of Georgia, as well as, a Level 1 trauma center and stroke center.

Our Mission

Our mission is to train the next generation of physician anesthesiologists within a culture of patient safety and ensure exposure to a diverse patient population presenting with a broad spectrum of diseases and disorders of varying complexity; to develop an enriching evidence-based didactic curriculum within a culture of inquiry; to provide leadership in teaching, discovery and service; to ensure equal opportunities free from discrimination based on sex, race, religion or nationality and in an environment conducive to overall wellness; and to strive for excellence in all we do. During training, residents are expected to demonstrate the seven attributes deemed essential by the American Board of Anesthesiology to be considered qualified to safely practice anesthesia as a certified physician anesthesiologist.

Our program aim is for our anesthesiology training program to impart the knowledge, judgment, clinical and interpersonal skills necessary to function as an independent anesthesiologist. The training continuum follows the Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Anesthesiology developed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
