The Medical College of Georgia Medical Scholars Program offers the opportunity for all medical students in good academic standing to engage in research activities – basic science, translational, clinical, and educational – in close mentorship with faculty who are nationally and internationally distinguished scientists, clinicians, and academic scholars.
Most students carry out their research training for a ten-week period during the summer following completion of year one. More senior students are eligible to participate, given an appropriate time commitment. Students wishing more rigorous research training should consider year-long external fellowships, or the MD/PhD Program at the Medical College of Georgia.
Students who intend to carry out summer scholarship will need to submit a brief research proposal application. The proposal, which should address the research question/hypothesis, experimental design, and means of evaluation and interpretation, will be evaluated by a set of faculty that is representative for the indicated research interest. Application guidelines can be found by viewing the Medical Scholars Program Handbook.
The number of research slots that can be supported by the Dean of The Medical College
of Georgia is limited, and will be determined on the basis of project merit as recommended
by the appropriate review committee.
