Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Surgical ICU

Experience

Working alongside surgeons and cardiologists, you will perform:

  • cardiac surgeries including coronary revascularizations (off pump and on pump), valve replacements and repairs, ECMOextracorporeal membrane oxygenation
  • thoracic surgeries including lobectomies, epicardial pacemaker lead placements, thoracoscopic MAZE procedures
  • major vascular procedures including open and endovascular repair of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms
  • electrophysiological procedures including catheter ablations for dysrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, placement of cardiac implantable electronic devices, balloon valvuloplasties

During this rotation, you will work closely with faculty certified in advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography and learn to integrate vital information available from 2D and 3D TEE technology including speckle tracking and 3D reconstructions of the left ventricle and mitral valve. This information can be used to guide procedures and fine-tune perioperative management of patients.
