ANESTHESIOLOGY AT MCG

The mission of our department is to train future anesthesiologists, conduct research that improves patient care, and provide the best of care to our patients. Our educational efforts include clerkships, anesthesia residency, and pain medicine and anesthesiology critical care fellowships. CHAIRMEN

Dr Perry P Volpitto, 1937-1972

In 1937, Dr Volpitto established the first academic department of anesthesia in the South in what is now Augusta University. He was the sole faculty member until 1946, during which time he established our residency and externships programs and was also instrumental in founding the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists. He served as president of the GSA, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and other professional societies. His lifetime contributions were recognized with the Medical Association of Georgia's Lamartine Griffin Hardman Cup (1966) and Distinguished Service Award (1975), the ASA's Distinguished Service Award (1975), and GSA's Crawford W, Long Award.

Dr Zachariah W Gramling, 1973-1984

Dr Gramling ran a private practice in South Carolina before pursuing an anesthesiology residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He joined the faculty after graduating in 1959 and quickly rose to the rank of professor. As Chair, he not only increased the housestaff and updated the anesthesia elective so that it was more relevant to future anesthesiologists, but he also helped to establish the respiratory department in what is now the College of Allied Health Sciences as well as to establish the Shock/Trauma Unit. He served as president of the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists and received GSA's Crawford W. Long Award for his contributions to anesthesiology. The Z.W. Gramling Memorial Scholarship was established by anesthesia alumni Drs Greg Gay and Margaret DeVore and, in 2014, the Zachariah W. Gramling Endowed Chairmanship was brought to fruition.

Dr Robert S Crumrine, 1985-1999

Dr Crumrine came to us from the University of Tennessee where he had served as Professor and Chair. Among his goals was to develop a continuity with people who graduate from MCG. Under Dr Crumrine's leadership, the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists staff transformed from being volunteers to professionals who provided outreach to members and affiliated organizations. He received GSA's Crawford W. Long Award in 2006. An award named in his honor is given each year to a first-year MCG anesthesia resident who best exemplifies the characteristics of an anesthesiologist.

Dr C Alvin Head, 2002-2013

Research and the recruitment of fellowship-trained faculty were the focus of Dr Head's tenure. He was the first president of the Resident Component of the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists, served as president of the Academy of Anesthesiology (2008), and was active in the American Society of Anesthesiologists and American Medical Association.

Dr Steffen E Meiler, 2014-

Dr Meiler is a physician-scientist who is strengthening our basic and clinical research presence. E-learning and simulation are educational priorities. He became the first recipient of the Zachariah W. Gramling Endowed Chairmanship in Anesthesiology in 2018.
