We would like to congratulate Dr. Rebecca Kunak for winning the 2019 A. Bleakley Chandler, MD Resident Award for Excellence in Pathology. Dr. Kunak began her pathology residency in July of 2016 after completing a year of surgery training and will graduate in June of 2020. During her time at our institution, she has displayed great skills in teaching, service, research, and leadership. Her true dedication to optimal patient care is evidence daily by her application of medical knowledge, exceptional efficiency, work ethic, and willingness to serve. She has presented numerous posters at national meetings, and a recent oral platform resulted in a 2nd place award for her efforts. In addition, she has published several articles in peer-reviewed publications. After graduation, she will complete a Hematopathology fellowship at University of New Mexico.

James R. Lyle Resident Research Award

Dr. Rebecca Kunak received 2nd prize in platform presentation for her research at the annual Richmond County Medical Society meeting.

Mr. Lyle served as the executive director of the Richmond County Medical Society from 1978 until his passing in 2007. He was very dedicated to organized medicine. This is an annual oral platform research competition which is held in his honor. The event gives residents an opportunity to present original research as well as provide continuing medical education credit to the physicians of Richmond County.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Thomas Thompson (Zach) for winning the 2019 Peiper Award. Dr. Thompson began his residency in July of 2016 after earning his MD from the Medical College of Georgia and will graduate from the residency training program in June of 2020. Dr. Thompson has a true passion for research and has shown excellent productivity during his residency. He has presented numerous posters at national meetings in addition to several publications. Dr. Thompson's exemplary knowledge in pathology and passion for Transfusion Medicine fuels his academic success. After graduation, he will complete a Transfusion Medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Nikhil Patel for being awarded the Faculty teaching award as voted by the residents for the 2018-2019 academic year.  Dr. Patel has shown a significant dedication towards resident education in his lectures, unknown lectures, and sign-out sessions. He has a great ability in pointing out the fundamental details one must use in approaching a case.  Additionally, it is clear that he listens to and incorporates resident feedback into his lectures to better respond to the residents individual learning styles. He received his medical degree at the N.D.M.V.P.S Medical college in India.  He pathology training includes the University of Florida, East Carolina Brody School of Medicine, and Baylor College of Medicine.  Dr. Patel currently is assistant professor and director of cytopathology.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Matthew Powell for winning the 2018 A. Bleakley Chandler, MD Resident Award for Excellence in Pathology. Dr. Powell began his residency in July of 2015 and will graduate in June of 2019. During his time at our institution, he has displayed great skills in teaching, service, research, and leadership. Throughout his residency he has shown exemplary collegiality by always lending a helping hand to his colleagues, thereby demonstrating true leadership and service. He is passionate about teaching, and is heavily relied upon to guide and instruct his junior residents. He has presented numerous posters at national meetings including two at the upcoming CAP 2018 Annual meeting. After graduation, he will complete a Dermatopathology fellowship at Geisinger Health System.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Won Lee for winning the 2018 Peiper Award and the Travel Award from the Southeast Section of American Association for Clinical Chemistry for Excellence in Pathology Research. Dr. Lee began his residency in July of 2015 and will graduate in June of 2019. Won has a true passion for research and has shown exemplary productivity during his residency. He has presented numerous posters at national meetings including 6 at the annual USCAP meeting during his first year in residency alone. Recent work regarding serum free light chains in neoplastic monoclonal gammopathies has resulted in 2 poster presentations and a platform presentation at national meetings and two publications. After graduation, he will complete a hematopathology fellowship at University of Pennsylvania.

We would like to congratulate Dr. C. Todd Bruker for his significant contributions to resident education and mentoring. Dr. Bruker has shown significant enthusiasm and dedication towards resident learning and professional development. He has a true knack for finding the best in each resident to ensure they succeed and develop into their fullest potential. Dr. Bruker is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia and now serves as the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at our affiliated VA Medical Center.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Abric Rosengrant for winning the 2017 Chandler Award. Dr. Rosengrant began his residency in July of 2013 and graduated in June of 2017.  During his time at our institution, he displayed great skills in lab management and leadership.  In his Chief year (2016-2017), he completed an impressive project regarding improving the phlebotomy procedure in the Emergency Room, which effectively changed policy.  He is currently completing a cytopathology fellowship at Geisinger Health System in Danville, PA.

Dr. Joanna Chaffin completed her residency in June of 2017, which included a Chief year (2016-2017). She has been recognized for her strong diagnostic skills and effectiveness as well timeliness in research.  During her time at our institution, she published three separate book chapters regarding myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms associated with eosinophilia and was the first author to various research projects including work on investigating the molecular mechanism of aggressive systemic mastocytosis. Dr. Chaffin is currently completing a Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology Fellowship at the University of Florida, which will be followed by a Hematopathology Fellowship.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Singh for his significant contributions to resident education and success this past academic year. Dr. Singh has shown a significant amount of enthusiasm and dedication towards resident learning. He has gone above and beyond to ensure residents understand fundamental concepts in laboratory management.  Beyond teaching textbook facts, Dr. Singh’s approach to teaching enables residents to learn how to become successful laboratory directors in their future endeavors.  Dr. Singh’s hobbies include reading Henry’s and lunchtime.
