The mission of Augusta University's School of Computer and Cyber Sciences is to provide
high-engagement, state-of-the-art technology education and research across its computer
science, information technology and cybersecurity disciplines.
It is a vibrant time in the life of Augusta University, and the School of Computer
and Cyber Sciences has boundless opportunities for growth and advancement in being
a national leader for cyber security.
The vision of Augusta University’s School of Computer and Cyber Sciences is to be
an institution of excellence in education, research, outreach & engagement in the
fields of computer science, information technology, and cybersecurity.
With substantially larger faculty and student enrollment, the School will provide
leading edge education in computer science, information technology, cyber operations,
cybersecurity, and engineering at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels.
Our School will be conducting leadership-class research in computer science and cyber
engineering. The School will be a leader in community outreach and engagement with
strong contributions to its constituencies, including our university, state and military,
as well as private and public sector organizations.
School of Computer and Cyber Sciences History
Computer Science and Information Technology have deep roots in the history of Augusta
In the 1970’s, the former Augusta College initiated a Bachelor’s of Science degree
program in Computer Science through the College of Arts and Sciences. The College
of Business also founded their Management Information Systems degree program. The
first computer science degree was awarded in 1979 to Ann Anderson, a former telecommunications professional with BellSouth and AT&T.
In 2012, the Hull College of Business welcomed the Computer Science degree program
to its program offerings. The following year, the Bachelor of Science in Information
Technology degree and Cyber Defender/Advanced Cyber Defender Certificates are introduced
to the Hull College's degree program offerings.
In 2015, Augusta University’s Cyber Institute was founded to bring together academia, industry and government to address cybersecurity
education, research and workforce development needs.
In an effort to expand and further enhance the university’s computer science, information
technology, and cyber security programs, Augusta University President Brooks Keel
announced the founding of the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences in June 2017.
In 2018, the school headquarters moved to the new Georgia Cyber Center, Augusta University’s Riverfront Campus in Downtown Augusta.
In October 2018, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved
a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity Engineering. The first students enrolled in this program in Fall 2019. Augusta University is
the only institution in the State of Georgia to provide a cybersecurity engineering
program and only one of a handful in the country.
In 2019, the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences celebrated 40 years of computer science education at Augusta University, with the first computer science degree conferred in 1979 to
alumna Ann Anderson.

In 2020, the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences graduate degree programs grew with
the addition of a Masters in Computer Science. This graduate program will begin with its inaugural cohort in Fall 2020.
In April 2021, the University System of Georgia unanimously approved the introduction
of a new Doctor of Philosophy in Computer and Cyber Sciences degree program. The Computer and Cyber Sciences doctoral program is the first PhD
program for the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences, adding to the graduate degree
programs available to interested students.
