School of Computer and Cyber Sciences History

Computer Science and Information Technology have deep roots in the history of Augusta University.

In the 1970’s, the former Augusta College initiated a Bachelor’s of Science degree program in Computer Science through the College of Arts and Sciences. The College of Business also founded their Management Information Systems degree program. The first computer science degree was awarded in 1979 to Ann Anderson, a former telecommunications professional with BellSouth and AT&T.

In 2012, the Hull College of Business welcomed the Computer Science degree program to its program offerings. The following year, the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree and Cyber Defender/Advanced Cyber Defender Certificates are introduced to the Hull College's degree program offerings.

In 2015, Augusta University’s Cyber Institute was founded to bring together academia, industry and government to address cybersecurity education, research and workforce development needs.

In an effort to expand and further enhance the university’s computer science, information technology, and cyber security programs, Augusta University President Brooks Keel announced the founding of the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences in June 2017.

In 2018, the school headquarters moved to the new Georgia Cyber Center, Augusta University’s Riverfront Campus in Downtown Augusta.

In October 2018, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity Engineering. The first students enrolled in this program in Fall 2019. Augusta University is the only institution in the State of Georgia to provide a cybersecurity engineering program and only one of a handful in the country.

In 2019, the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences celebrated 40 years of computer science education at Augusta University, with the first computer science degree conferred in 1979 to alumna Ann Anderson.
