Students enrolled in this pathway will complete extensive research with a faculty mentor during the third or fourth year of medical school.
The research can be completed in any 5 months from March of the third year through graduation, but the 5 months must be consecutive. Students will be required to present a poster at Research Day and give a final presentation to their mentor, research team, and curriculum faculty.
Projected Timeline beginning with Class of 2027
Can regional campus students enroll?
Yes! Your mentor can be any AU faculty member at your home campus or in Augusta.
Can you do away electives?
Yes, but you can’t enroll in any additional courses during the 5 months of research.
Do you need a strong research background?
No. This program, in addition to the scholarly project, will help develop your research skills and portfolio.
Do you need a research project to apply to the program?
Yes. Many students will continue their scholarly project work. EII will help mentor match for scholarly project, but not for the Advanced Research Pathway.
Does the research done appear on residency applications?
Depends. ERAS is due in September. You can talk about this at the interviews and the application will say you are enrolled in this pathway, but you may not have done much of the work yet.
Are there opportunities to present at MCG?
Yes. Every April and September, students are invited to the MCG’s Research Day. Presenting at Research Day is a requirement of this pathway.
