Clinical Trial

The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful: A photographic and reflective exploration of the LGBTQIA+ community in the south.

According to GLAAD (2022) members of the LGBTQIA+ community in the south experience and face difficulties in their everyday lives at higher rates than the rest of the country. These difficulties include but are not limited to public discomfort with the LGBTQIA+ community and events, nondiscrimination, anti-trans, and anti-LGBTQIA+ laws and policies, conflicts in personal and family life, as well as lack of representation in public office. With this in consideration, this study aims to document and explore what it is like to be member of the LGBTQIA+ community living in the southern region of the united states. Participants will be given the opportunity to document their experiences by taking photographs with disposable cameras, writing in a jounrnal, and completing an interview with the primary researcher.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Given the personal nature of this project, participants will be selected on a volunteer basis with consideration of the inclusion criteria.Inclusion criteria includes: Individuals who self-identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. From this standpoint the primary researcher is defining self-identification as individuals who have disclosed to friends, family, and/or the community broadly that their sexuality or gender identity is lesbian, gay, bisexual, Trans*, queer, intersex, asexual, or any other gender/sexual identity falling under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. Individuals must be classified as adults. The primary researcher is defining adults as individuals who are at least 18 years of age as of January 1st, 2023. Individuals must live in the geographic south. The primary researcher is defining the geographic south based on the United States Census Bureau which identifies Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia as the south. Individuals who do not fit all three inclusion criteria (i.e., members of the LGBTQIA+ community, adults as of 01/01/2023, and live in the geograpghic south) will not be considered for this study.
