A tailored diabetes prevention program designed to create healthy women, healthy communities, and health equity in rural Georgia

This project seeks to enhance the implementation of the Diabetes Prevention Program in the following innovative ways: 1.) a focus on socio-ecological needs 2.) addresses the disparities in access to the Diabetes Prevention Program in rural areas and 3.) a multi-level and tailored approach to the DPP. Specific Aim #1 : Develop a tailored 3-month modification of the DPP, guided by a core socio-ecological needs assessment of younger women, ages 18-50, at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, living in the Augusta Perinatal Region of GA. Specific Aim #2: Examine the preliminary effectiveness of a tailored 3-month modification of the DPP to meet the specific needs of younger women, ages 18--50, at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, living in the Augusta Perinatal Region of GA Hypothesis: The tailored DPP 3 -month modification will produce similar outcomes to the traditional DPP program


Eligibility Criteria

  • Inclusion critieria: Non-pregnant women, not planning pregnancy within the next 12 mos. ages 18-50 years high risk for T2DM (BMI>24, personal history of gestational diabetes, family history of diabetes, personal history of high blood pressure, physical inactivity) diagnosed with prediabetes living in Augusta Perinatal Region of GA (i.e. Burke, Columbia, Elbert, Emanuel, Glascock, Greene, Hancock, Jackson, Jefferson, Jenkins, McDuffie, Richmond, Screven, Taliaferro, Warren, Washington, and Wilkes) will be eligible to participate in the study Exclusion critieria: males not meeting age range,18-50 years living outside Augusta Perinatal region pregnant during intervention period taking fertility medications or planning pregnancy in next 12 months previous diagnosis of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes taking weight loss or any glucose lowering medications limited reading and/or English comprehension.
