Clinical Trial

Glycemic Excursion Minimization (GEM) to Outshine Health Disparities: RCT

This research study will adapt GEM, a new way to keep blood sugars in range for people with type 2 diabetes. Based on qualitative work with existing GEM program materials, we will adapt the GEM program to suit young Black adults with diabetes. The GEM program uses teaching and continuous glucose monitoring to empower people to learn what difference dietary and physical activity choices make for their blood sugar levels.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Inclusion criteria: Black adults (age 18+) with type 2 diabetes, and capable of making dietary and physical activity changes. Exclusion criteria: Not on insulin or medications that increase insulin secretion (e.g., glimepiride, glipizide, glyburide, repaglinide, nateglinide) or medications that impede weight loss (e.g., prednisone), not pregnant or planning pregnancy in the next 2 months, and no history of moderate to severe hypoglycemia (needing assistance to recover from low blood sugar).
