Clinical Trial

Salivary inflammatory marker levels predictive ability for quantified marginal bone loss (MBL) around dental implants and risk of implant failure.

This multi-site study will attemp to determine if there is a predictive link between the pre-existing levels of inflammatory markers in the saliva with the risk for loss in marginal bone (MBL) around dental implants. Patients will have their implant monitored for MBL for 3 years. Patients will answer a brief questionaire about their dental and general health history at the time the tissue sample is taken. For the anlysis, inflamitory marker levels will be stratified into groups and MBL implant survival rates over time modeled for each group.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Inclusion criteria: - Patients age 18 or older (identified after completing clinical demographic information) - At least 1 missing tooth to be replaced with a dental implant in a healed site - Patients scheduled for fixed dental implant prostheses (i.e., implant, bridges or crowns) - Sufficient bone for implant placement without extensive augmentation (i.e., lateral sinus augmentations, guided bone regeneration involving membranes and tacks, block grafts) - No recent history (6 months) of surgery at the proposed implant site - Able to attend follow-up appointments for 3 years - No contraindication to routine dental radiographs Exclusion criteria: - Patients under the age of 18 - Patients not requiring / seeking implant treatment - Patients with severe xerostomia (insufficient saliva production) - Fully edentulous patients - Patients scheduled for removable implant prosthetic treatment (i.e., implant overdentures) - Diabetic patients with self-reported HbA1c over 8% - Patients on bisphosphonate medications. - Pregnant women - Active, moderate to severe periodontitis - Implant sites requiring significant hard or soft tissue augmentation
