CSF flow rate through cerebral aqueduct as an approximation for CSF production and absorption determined by MRI techniques

CSF Flow rates can be determined noninvasively by MRI techniques. The flow rate of CSF through the aqueduct should be the same as the rate of CSF creation and absorption in healthy individuals. The purpose of this study is to determine the flow rate of CSF through the cerebral aqueduct in 15 healthy volunteers by 2D cine MRI as an approximation of CSF production and absorption.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Inclusion Criteria: Healthy adult, > 18 years old, volunteers No Central Nervous System (CNS) disease (i.e. hydrocephalus) No history of CNS disease requiring shunt placement Exclusion Criteria: Central Nervous System disease (i.e. hydrocephalus) History of CNS disease requiring shunt placement Contraindications to MRI scanning claustrophobia/anxiety. metal implants or devices in body, i.e. artificial heart valve, pacemaker, insulin pump, metal plate, pin, or other metallic objects in their body, including gunshot or shrapnel
