Your Transformation from Medical Student to Orthopaedic Surgeon Starts Here

Our five-year orthopaedic residency program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It fulfills all the criteria for program graduates to sit for Part I of their board examination given by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Choosing a residency program is an important decision involving many factors that contribute to your experience and success in the program and beyond. We combine those factors into one program that prepares you for a fulfilling career in orthopaedic surgery.

Long history of teaching tomorrow’s doctors

Teaching the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons is at the heart of what we do. Founded in 1828, MCG is one of the nation’s oldest medical schools, where we’ve been training orthopaedic residents since 1945.

Clinical excellence in orthopaedic care

We serve as the leader in the delivery and advancement of orthopaedic care in Augusta’s River Region. We treat a full range of orthopaedic conditions, from routine to complex — providing residents with a training ground with limitless opportunity.

Subspecialty exposure

Our fellowship-trained and specialized faculty provide exposure to all aspects of orthopaedic surgery.

Collegial environment

Our residents are a close-knit group of individuals who take pride and ownership in the residency program. Our residents and faculty strive for excellence and constantly challenge each other to improve and grow personally and professionally. If you ask around our department, most will tell you that one of our greatest strengths is the camaraderie within the program.

  Research opportunities & support

As part of a large medical school with an undergraduate campus, we have the resources and support you need to translate clinical questions into high-quality research

  • We have research and clinical trials staff to help you complete your research studies.

  • We offer multidisciplinary exposure through routine collaboration — in clinical care and clinical research — with specialties across the institution such as infectious disease, pathology, physical therapy and rheumatology.

  • We provide departmental funding for residents to present their research at regional and national meetings.
  • We partner with programs and departments across Augusta University campuses and with other leading institutions across the United States to facilitate knowledge sharing. For example, our basic science faculty offer guidance on bench and translational research.

  • We offer a full-service medical library on the Health Sciences Campus. Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library offers a large collection of online journals and texts, research software such as EndNotes and SPSS, and a 3D printing lab.
