Since 1989 the Department of Family and Community Medicine has supported the MCG Students' Health Clinic for the homeless.
Started by the MCG Family and Community Medicine Interest Group and later also operated in collaboration with the St Vincent de Paul Health Clinic/Coordinated Health Services, this student run clinic meets on Monday evenings to serve the homeless and uninsured population of the Augusta area. As the only truly free clinic in the area, the clinic sees approximately 400-500 patients per year for both acute and chronic Family and Community Medicine care. Residents are assigned to the clinic on a rotating basis as part of their second year Community Medicine rotation. Family and Community Medicine faculty members serve as preceptors for the clinic. Recently awarded a $40,000 grant, this “store front” clinic strives to serve the underserved as well as educating both students and residents on the needs of this vulnerable patient population.
In conjunction with the Clinic for the Homeless, the Family and Community Medicine Interest Group also operates a bi-weekly evening clinic to serve indigent women in the area. A variety of women's services are offered, including well-woman exams, contraceptive counseling, acute care, STD and sexual health counseling and treatment. Residents rotate through the Women's Clinic during their gynecology and women's health months. Residents gain valuable experience in addressing the needs of vulnerable patient populations and also have the opportunity be involved in medical student education activities.
