Preoperative education in Head and Neck Cancer Patients undergoing free flap reconstruction

The main objective of this study is to better understand the health literacy and comprehension of patients who undergo head and neck cancer surgery involving free flap reconstruction. We aim to identify, by providing surveys at the time of appointments, we aim to understand the comprehension of free tissue reconstruction throughout the stages of the perioperative period using conventional methods such as verbal explanation, as well as medical illustrations and three-dimensional template produced models. Using various methodologies, we aim to determine if post-operative expectation and comprehension have direct relationship. We also will determine the perception of different visualizations impacts self-assessment of their condition and surgery.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients with head and neck cancer who see an ablative surgeon and reconstructive surgeon at separate visits 2. Patients who are 18 years of age or older 3. Patients with plan free flap head and neck reconstruction 4. Patients who want to provide feedback regarding educational experiences during the perioperative process Exclusion criteria: 1. Patient with history of prior free tissue transfer 2. Patients undergoing oncologic surgery without planned free flap reconstruction 3. Patiens who do not have at least 24 hours between seeing the oncologic surgeon and reconstructive surgeon
