We are a division of the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Our center was originally established as a Center for Public Service, with a mission to assist local public and non-profit agencies conduct research to improve their effectiveness. CSSR was recently established to expand upon that mission by providing support to faculty and students engaged in social science research more broadly. It has long hosted an immigration studies research program as well.

Many of our projects involve students as active partners, giving them an opportunity to apply social science research methods, learn about community issues, and work towards serving the common good.

For current event updates and information on our work, or if you're interested in initiating a project, please contact us!

Qualitative Research Lab

The Qualitative Research Lab (QRL) offers consultation and support for qualitative social scientific research at Augusta University.

CSSR Seminar Series

We host regular research talks from faculty inside and outside of AU to learn about each other’s’ research and help AU faculty develop their research programs. If you would like to present your research, please contact us!

Research Equipment

We house several physical resources that any faculty across AU are able to utilize when needed in their research.

Air-gapped Computer

We maintain two airgapped computers for faculty to analyze sensitive data that cannot be connected to the internet. These computers include all licensed AU data analysis software (SPSS, SAS, NVivo). We also work with faculty to ensure any software they need is downloaded onto these computers if they are actively using them for data analysis. Please contact us if you would like to use this resource for your research!

Digital Scanner

We house a digital scanner for any AU faculty to use in digitizing texts. Our Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 is state of the art for overhead scanners and is ideal for digitizing any primary materials into digital format. Once digitized these documents can then be analyzed qualitatively or computationally. Please contact us if you would like to use this resource for your research!

Augusta University, MCG team up with local students to build better relationships with pediatric patients

For two weeks this summer, April Hartman, MD, the division chief of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, and Melanie Kitchens O’Meara, PhD, an associate professor of performance studies in the Department of Art and Design, worked with members of Theatre AUG and local middle school students to teach them dramatic acting skills in order to become pediatric standardized patients for mock appointments with medical students.

Augusta University alumnus will give lecture on social issues

“These kind of lectures are important for the university. They bring faculty together to think through important research, but also bring the broader AU and Augusta community into conversation with each other on issues we as a society are facing.”
