Conference Details

General Surgery Morbidity & Mortality Conference
This conference is most often in an interactive format. Chief residents from each service present all mortalities and significant morbidities from the preceding week. The conference moderator, either the chairman of surgery or general surgery residency program director, directs appropriate questions and facilitates resident and medical student education specific to individual cases.

Department of Surgery Special Case Conference
This conference alternates with Grand Rounds and is most often in didactic format. Different sections within the Department of Surgery present a topic of their choice each week. Individual faculty members and/or residents in each section choose the weekly topic. Usually a senior level resident presents the lecture. The lecture concludes with a question and answer session.

General Surgery Grand Rounds
This conference alternates with the Special Case Conference and is most often in didactic format. Individual sections and presenters select topics and speakers. Guest lecturers include physicians specializing in gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery, surgical oncology, vascular and transplantation surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery and urology. The lecture concludes with a question and answer session.

General Surgery Skills Lab Curriculum
A skills lab and PGY-level specific skills curriculum has been developed, including a dry lab, wet lab and cadaver labs. Skill modules are presented weekly by faculty members from various departments. Our skills curriculum uses the ACS/APDS National skills curriculum as its model. The skills lab also serves as a venue for educational research.

Vascular Surgery/Interventional Radiology Conference
This conference is most often in an interactive format. Faculty from the section of vascular surgery and the department of radiology combine to present challenging clinical and technical patient management issues. Individual patient therapeutic rationale and treatment options are thoroughly discussed and initiated.

Department of Surgery Cancer Conference/Tumor Board
This conference is most often in an interactive format. Faculty from various sections of general surgery, in particular the oncology surgery faculty, present challenging clinical and technical patient management issues. Individual patient therapeutic rationale and treatment options are thoroughly discussed and initiated.

Journal Club
Journal Club is held monthly in the evening, usually at a restaurant. The topic for Journal Club rotates among the various sections of the department. Two residents, one junior and one mid-level or senior resident, are assigned one or more article(s). The junior resident introduces and provides a summary of the manuscript. The mid-level or senior resident then presents his or her critique of the article. Each presentation should take approximately five to ten minutes. One faculty member, practicing within the field of the article, is assigned to each article. His or her critique of the article is presented following the residents' reviews. This opens the discussion to the floor.
