MCG Educational Simulation is made up of three distinct, yet collaborative programs: simulation, clinical skills assessment and standardized patients. Our team of faculty and staff utilize the resources and expertise available to them to provide the best simulated learning experiences for MCG learners across the spectrum of education.
The majority of Educational Simulation activities occur at the Augusta University Interdisciplinary Simulation and Clinical Skills Center. To learn more about the center and to take a virtual tour, visit Augusta University Interdisciplinary Simulation Center.
Simulation Program
The Simulation Program at MCG provides immersive simulated clinical experiences using
low- and high-fidelity mannequins, task trainers, and other hands-on technologies
which provide opportunities for individual, group, and interprofessional learning.
Simulation is integrated across the spectrum of medical education including medical
students, residents, fellows and faculty.
Clinical Skills Assessment Program
The Clinical Skills Assessment Program at the Medical College of Georgia is structured
to provide an integrated clinical skills assessment across the medical student curriculum.
The students take their physical diagnosis course, which teaches them the basics of
the physical examination. At the end of each Phase of the curriculum a structured
OSCE is provided to assess students' history taking, physical examination skills and
patient communication. Students start with standardized patient contact in the first
month of medical school. It is our goal to ensure that students are well-trained clinicians
and to set our students up for success with their clinical activities and licensing
examinations.
Standardized Patients Program
Standardized Patients (SPs) are actors trained in various scenarios to portray patients, family members, translators, or other members of the health care team for the purpose of teaching and/or testing students or health care professionals within our educational program including MCG courses, simulations and OSCEs. Our program is designed to teach and assess various skills necessary for healthcare professionals to practice safe, effective, and compassionate care.
The program emphasizes the importance of:
Become a Standardized Patient
Our SPs come from all walks of life and are between 18-85 years of age. We strive
to have a diverse roster of individuals of any race, ethnicity, religion, and national
origin. Many of our SPs have backgrounds in education, social work, or some medical
profession, but all must possess excellent communications skills. Most of our SPs
find that their motivation to become part of the Standardized Patient Program is to
positively influence the education and training of future health care providers.
Successful standardized patients are:
