The Cellular Function Laboratory conducts basic science research in cell biology, cellular mechanism, inflammation, molecular biology, pathology, and biochemistry. Its main research goal is to examine the effects of alcohol metabolism on normal and obese cellular systems to observe mechanistic changes that may later be treated and/or reversed, and translate this research to patient care. Dr. Curry-McCoy also trains student researchers and mentors master's research projects for Clinical Laboratory Science graduate students.
Comparison of a novel venipuncture system versus a standard system for hemolysis prevention
An examination into the occurrence of hemolysis by type of blood collection system.
Hemolysis, the breakdown of red blood cells that releases hemoglobin into the blood
stream or blood collection devices, is a concern of clinical laboratories because
it affects test results. This study hopes to determine whether certain types of collection
techniques will reduce the chance and severity of hemolysis by comparing the S-Monovette®
collection tube system with a standard vacuum tube system used to draw blood specimens
from IV lines. Co-Investigator
