Lab Animal Education & Training

As stated in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (8th ed.), “[a]ll personnel involved with the care and use of animals must be adequately educated, trained, and/or qualified in basic principles of laboratory animal science to help ensure high-quality science and animal well-being.” In order to assist Augusta University research staff in meeting this standard, DLAS provides a number of training opportunities for different purposes.

Facility Access

Following the completion of steps 1-4 on the IACUC’s eSirius and Animal Facility Access (Research Personnel), all new staff must complete the appropriate facility seminar(s) and tour(s) prior to receiving animal facility access. Current staff may be asked to attend training when requesting access to a new facility or if previous training is determined to no longer be current. Please click on the “Training” link for upcoming training dates and times. Please note that you will be emailed by the Training Coordinator with specific location information after the IACUC Compliance Coordinator has verified that you have completed the IACUC requirements.

DLAS offers a number of hands-on training opportunities at the request of research staff. Previous offerings include blood collection, tissue collection for genotyping, organ collection, injection methods, rodent surgery, and estrus cycle sampling. Please contact the Training Coordinator to request practical training.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any access or training-related questions 706-721-4210.
