The Dental College of Georgia will participate in the ADEA Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) for the entering 2022 admissions cycle.

The ADEA Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (ADEA AADSAS®) is the centralized application service for all US dental schools. ADEA AADSAS simplifies the application process by allowing applicants to complete a single, standardized application.

Georgia Residency

Georgia residents, along with up to 10 percent of out-of-state residents and eligible international candidates, are considered for acceptance. Candidates of Aiken and Edgefield counties in South Carolina are no longer eligible for in-state tuition. Previously, all Augusta University students in these counties were eligible for an in-state waiver for tuition purposes. This is no longer the case for candidates applying to the DMD program.

To establish Georgia residency, an applicant must show proof of residing in Georgia for at least 12 consecutive months before enrollment. Examples for establishing residency are obtaining a Georgia driver’s license, vehicle and voter registration. International applicants must present valid U.S. Permanent Resident documentation or other valid Visa documentation. All applicants who are granted an interview must show additional documentation as proof of lawful presence in the United States before being offered acceptance.

All letters of recommendation to The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University must be submitted through the AADSAS service. The applicants for the entering class have two options for submitting letters of recommendations:

Option 1:
  1. packet or composite / committee letter
  2. a dentist (that you have shadowed)

Option 2:
  1. an academic professional (instructor, advisor, department chair, etcetera)
  2. a dentist (that you have shadowed)
  3. personal letter*
  4. personal letter*

Once an applicant has begun an AADSAS application and lists their recommenders and contact information, each recommender will receive a link via email with instructions on how to submit their letter on behalf of the applicant.

The recommender will receive the link as soon as the applicant adds and saves their name and contact information. The applicant's AADSAS application does not have to be finished or submitted before the recommendation links are sent.

Applicant Interviews

Interviews are required for invited applicants.  Typically, interviews are held from September to December.

Candidates participate in two, one-on-one interviews with members of The DCG Admissions Committee. The interviewer will help assess the applicant's personality, motivation and ability for a career in dentistry.

For more information, click here.

Lawful Presence Verification

All interviewed applicants are required to submit documentation proving that they are lawfully residing in the United States of America.

There are several forms of documentation that may be acceptable for international applicants to verify lawful presence.

For more information regarding DCG's lawful presence requirement, click here.

Click here for a complete list of acceptable lawful presence documentation.

Final admission decisions are made based on the grade point averages (overall and science), DAT scores, letters of recommendation, interviews, language test scores, as appropriate, and an assessment of the motivation and personal qualities of the applicant deemed most conducive to successfully completing the program and the practice of dentistry. The DCG accepts up to 10 percent of students from out-of-state and eligible international students into the entering class.

The DCG Admissions Committee takes into consideration all aspects of an applicant's background, which may be relevant to the successful practice of dentistry, including unusual educational experiences or background, life experiences, work experiences, demonstrations of leadership in activities, involvement in community and extracurricular activities, and experience in an oral health care setting. The Committee believes that students with diverse backgrounds are an asset to The Dental College of Georgia, the dental profession, the State of Georgia, and the United States.

Technical Standards

The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University is a state-assisted institution with the primary goal of educating dental health care providers for the citizens of the state of Georgia. The ethical practice of dentistry requires intellectual ability, physical competence and personal responsibility. Therefore, all requirements for admissions to the DCG must be satisfactorily completed by each applicant. In addition to demonstrating personal characteristics appropriate for a career in a health care profession, qualification for admission and graduation requires satisfying the following general standards:

  1. Sufficient intellectual capacity to fulfill the curricular requirements of the various required basic science and clinical courses;
  2. Ability to communicate with patients, colleagues, faculty, staff and other members of the health care community;
  3. Ability to learn and safely perform the technical skills required to complete the dental curriculum; and
  4. Sufficient emotional stability and responsibility to withstand the stresses, uncertainties and changing circumstances that characterize the practice of dentistry.

Specific technical standards, based on clinical competencies and accreditation standards of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, are available from the Office of Students, Admissions and Alumni.

Selection of a Career in Dentistry Should Be an Informed Decision

The selection of a career should be made after careful examination of the pros and cons of the field under consideration. Observing in the office of a general dentist is the best way to learn about dentistry. To be a competitive applicant, the Student Admissions and Recruitment Committee highly recommends that applicants make arrangements to observe in the offices of one or more general dentists. While observing in a dentist 's office is not a requirement for admission, it is seen by the admissions committee as one measure of an applicant 's interest in dentistry as a career.
